Singularities by Ableton: a free Pack for all Live 10 users Good news if you’ve been waiting for someone to deliver the goods on your classic-synth wishlist for some time. This year, Santa’s got.
It’s filled with sounds from vintage synths and works with any version of Live 10. So toss the turkey leg and feast instead on Singularities, a specially prepared selection of single-sample synth-instruments by Ableton sound designer Huston Singletary.
Huston has put a lot of love and experience into recreating the quirks and nuances of classic gear for the Pack’s 40 Instrument Racks, with a focus on using onboard Sampler and Simpler features (like filter envelopes and key tracking) to allow expressive and realistic playback reminiscent of the original hardware.
On top of these instruments, there are plenty of MIDI clips to start ideas, and two retro-sounding Drum Kits. So this is no pair of novelty socks – you’re likely to use the sounds again and again.

As the name suggests, Minus is a haven for minimal, pulsating techno. Founded in the 00’s by Richie Hawtin, Minus became fertile ground for a whole generation of musicians – with a strong focus on sound design and atmosphere. 10 of these artists – Ambivalent, Barem, Click Box, Fabrizio Maurizi, Gaiser, Heartthrob & Troy Pierce, Hobo, JPLS, Magda, and Marc Houle – contributed to the diverse and inspiring Minus Live Packs collection. Each Pack is centered on a set, focusing on an element of music production. JPLS shares some of his experimental secrets, using envelopes on Live's effects for leftfield sounds, and a network of Clips and follow actions to for generative composition. Marc Houle and Magda, meanwhile, provide studies in building and placing atmospheric sounds. Minus specializes in sounds that are part club and part haunted house, and these two sets are master classes in this influential aesthetic.
Elsewhere in the Pack, Barem reveals how he sequences full tracks on the fly to get over the “clip to arrangement” hump - definitely something to try if you’ve got a Push handy. On the flipside, Gaiser’s Live Set shows how he cuts up and performs his tracks live - and he’s certainly known for his live sets.
Some of you reading will no doubt be wondering whether the secrets are revealed behind Ambivalent’s trademark vocals – they are, and in a set of effects Racks that are all yours to use!
